Greetings!
I hope all is well in this cold and icy time period. If you are out and about, please be careful. As reported previously via emails, our compatriot Tom Palmer passed away Jan 23, and graveside services are now scheduled to be February 6th at 3:30 p.m. at Memorial Lawn Cemetery, Arkansas City. A little Kansas history: January 29th marked the 149th Anniversary of the statehood of Kansas. The official dates of the WBTS is from 1861-1865, though it can be said it really started in the mid 1850’s with the Border War between Kansas and Missouri. When we think about battles of the WBTS, we rarely think of Kansas, however there were several battles/skirmishes in Kansas before and after the official beginning of the war, including: Kansas-Missouri Border War—Prior to WBTS Wakarusa War (December, 1855); Sacking of Lawrence (May, 1856); Pottawatomie Massacre (May, 1856); Battle of Black Jack (June, 1856); Battle of Franklin (June, 1856); Battle of Fort Saunders (August, 1856); Battle of Fort Titus (August, 1856); Battle of Osawatomie (August, 1856); Battle of Hickory Point (September, 1856); Marais des Cygnes Massacre (May, 1858); Battle of the Spurs (December, 1858) War Between the States 1861-65 Lawrence Massacre (August, 1863); Fort Blair (Baxter Springs) Massacre (October, 1863); Battle of Mine Creek (October, 1864); Battle of Trading Post/Marais des Cygnes (October, 1864), as well as the burning of Humboldt, KS in 1861. The Battle of Mine Creek was one of the largest cavalry battles of the entire WBTS.
Respectfully, Kevin Ivey
